Frequently Asked Questions
How does the Vhear test work?
<<Vhear>> uses three English digits spoken in the presence of background noise at different volumes to screen the hearing of both ears simultaneously. This is known as a digits-in-noise test. The test determines your speech reception threshold (SRT) in signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) dB. This means that the test determines your ability to hear speech in background noise.
Is the test reliable?
Yes, the test content has been clinically validated and the research has been published in multiple peer-reviewed academic journals. Research has validated that the sensitivity and specificity of the test to detect hearing loss is 90%.

Can anybody do the test?
Anybody aged 16 years and older may complete the Vhear test. It is not recommended that the test is used for young children, as an understanding of language is necessary for the test.
When I do the test, the numbers become so soft that I cannot hear them anymore. What should I do?
If you are unsure of which numbers were spoken, guess the answers. The speech component will become louder again
Can the test be taken without headphones?
It is most ideal to take the test using headphones or earphones, either plugged in or paired (Bluetooth) with a desktop/laptop/tablet or mobile phone. The accuracy of the test is compromised should loudspeakers or the speakers of a laptop/computer or tablet device is used.
